...where colors play and hoodoos dance
The opening concert of the Free Spirits Ensemble 2009-2010 season includes the Copland "Largo for Clarinet"; "Food From The Spirits" by Sarah Quartal; "Doric Dances" and "Phantasies" for alto saxophone and piano by Richard Faith; "Promenade"for two guitars by Stephen Dodgson; and the premiere of "where colors play and hoodoos dance" by Lanette Lind. Irene Burke, flute; Jim Williams, clarinet; Wayne Leechford, saxophone; and Lanette Lind, piano, will be joined by guest guitarists Craig Wiggins and Patrick Flynn with Teresa Fernandez as narrator.

The Free Spirits with the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra
The Free Spirits Ensemble will join the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra in its 30th Anniversary Concert. The program will include an encore performance of "where colors play and hoodoos dance" by Lanette Lind, "Milonga in Ay Menor" and "A Don Nicanor Paredes" by Astor Piazzolla with Teresa Fernandez, soprano, and guest tango dancers Jason Laughlin. With copyrights ranging from 1995 to July, 2009, this is truly music of our time. The program will include "Reveries" for alto saxophone, clarinet, and piano by Thomas Massella; "Fantasy Trio" for clarinet, cello, piano by Robert Muczynski; "Windswept" and "Reflections" for clarinet and piano by Adrienne Albert; "Poems" for cello and piano by Richard Faith, and "Episodes" for saxophone by Ellen Zwilich. In addition to some new musical fare by members of the Free Spirits Ensemble, this concert will also feature some young guest artists and a light-hearted look at musical history. This is a concert for everyone!

Cabaret!
With music ranging from "Benny's Gigs" for clarinet and double bass to tangos by Albeniz and Piazzolla, "Jealousy" by Gade and "Huapango" by Moncayo, the Free Spirits Ensemble will present a delightful evening of music, dance, wine and cheese in a cabaret setting. Yang Xi, violin; Izabela Spiewak, violin; Jane Salemson, cello; Dan Zehr, double bass; Jim Williams, clarinet; Teresa Fernandez, soprano; and, Lanette Lind, piano, will be joined by guest dancer, Jason Laughlin. After the concert, Jason will also give a brief tango lesson and DJ for your dancing pleasure. (Limited seating so make your reservations early)

Joint Concert with the Concert Dancers of Raleigh
In addition to hearing the waltzes of Ned Rorem's "Picnic on the Marne", a "Trio" for clarinet, violin and piano by Alex Shapiro, and other compositions, the audience will have the opportunity to see Karen Edwards choreography to Copland's "Largo" and other works. Tasi Matthews, violin; Jim Williams, clarinet; Wayne Leechford, saxophone; and, Lanette Lind, piano, will provide the music and the Concert Dancers of Raleigh will provide the dance.
